Rick Barton
Archaeological Project and Teaching Officer
Rick Barton has worked in archaeology for over 15 years, with the majority of that time spent in the Northern Isles of Scotland.
During his time studying archaeology at the University of Bradford, he acquired a large amount of field work experience in Shetland and contributed to the Old Scatness and Jarshof Environs projects as a student and eventually as a supervisor.
As part of his training he worked for Oxford Archaeology on several major infrastructure projects, including the M6 toll road construction. He graduated from the University of Bradford in 2003 with a 2:1 honours degree in Archaeology and a Diploma of Professional Archaeology. After graduation he worked with the University of Bradford as a supervisor on numerous projects and as course demonstrator, as well as continuing his involvement with the Old Scatness Project.
In 2005 he became a freelance archaeologist in Shetland providing consultation and archaeological services for developments ranging in scale from small private developments to large scale infrastructure projects. He has also been involved in numerous community projects working the Scape Trust and local community groups in Shetland, Orkney and the Scottish Mainland.
In 2009 he took over the position of Viking Unst Project Coordinator for the Shetland Amenity Trust.
In late 2009 he began working for the Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology as a supply Project Officer as well as continuing to provide freelance archaeological services. During this time he has worked as the lead on several major developments in Shetland, focussing on the Laggan Tormore Project and the construction the Shetland Gas Plant and pipelines.
In 2015 he took up the post of Project and Teaching Officer with ORCA, based at Orkney College UHI and continues to work on a variety of projects in the Northern Isles and Northern Scotland.
Key Experience
2015: Sullom Voe Gas Sweetening plant
Duties included undertaking walkover surveys, contributing to archaeological management plans and coordinating archaeological watching briefs for the construction of a gas sweetening plant and its associated infrastructure at Sullom Voe, Shetland. Responsibilities include leasing with clients and contractors on site regarding ongoing archaeological and cultural heritage management.
2009 – 2015: Lagan Tormore Project
Ongoing involvement in the Shetland Gas Plant and cross-country pipeline development at Sullom Voe, Shetland including site assessment, geophysical and geoarchaeologocial surveying and intrusive evaluation. During the construction phase undertook duties including leasing with clients and contractors on site regarding ongoing archaeological management, coordination of watching briefs over several work areas, interventions on potentially archaeologically significant features and leading excavations on large scale archaeological sites within the development framework.
2013 Kergord Converter Station and Cable Route
Involvement in Geophysical surveys followed by monitoring of geotechnical works and targeted excavations and monitoring of geotechnical pits associated with the proposed construction of a Converter Station at upper Kergord and its associated cable routes through Weisadale Voe, Shetland.
2012 – 2014 Scottish Water Mains Renewal Scheme
Archaeological Consultation for the large scale water mains renewal and replacement schemes for Scottsih Water across Shetland including Desk Based Assessments, Walkover Surveys, Intrusive Site Evaluation and Watching Briefs in Trondra, Scalloway, Tingwall, Weisdale, North Mavine and Unst.
2009 Viking Unst Project Coordinator
Coordinating aspects of the project looking into the Viking heritage of the most Northerly Isle in the Shetland Archipelago with duties ranging from developing long term living history and interpretation elements of the project to providing management plans for the preservation and presentation of excavated archaeological monuments and organising a Conference for the Project. Duties also involved providing support and assistance in archaeological excavation, survey and post excavation.
2007-2008 Shetland HVDC route selection and Environmental Appraisal
Consultation for the proposed route of a high voltage direct current transmission link on behalf of Entec UK Ltd for Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission Limited (SHETL) including walkover surveys and desk based assessments within the Kergord Valley and Weisdale Voe areas of Sheland and contributing to the Environmental Appraisal and scoping opinions for the Shetland route corridor options.
2007 Laggan Tormore Project
Contributions to Desk Based Assessments and Walkover Surveys on behalf of Aurora Enviornmental for an Environmental Impact Assessment into the onshore options for a new gas export pipeline and electrohydraulic umbilical to Sullom Voe Terminal.
2003 - 2004 Lincolnshire Cover Sands Project
Project supervisor for the University of Bradford with duties including Excavation, post excavation and report writing for a research project concerned with the enhancement of site assessment in deep windblown sand environments.
1999 – 2006 Old Scatness and Jarshof Environs Project
Starting as a student with the University of Bradford and developing into an experienced site assistant with responsibilities for site survey and excavation, was employed by the Shetland Amenity Trust in 2005 to co-ordinate and undertake consolidation of the site after completion of the main excavation. This involved detailed site survey, photogrammetric recording and leasing with Historic Scotland in the assessment of extant structural remains and producing proposals for conservation in conjunction with traditional craftsmen.
